To evade incoming missiles, fighter jets release flares to act as hot decoys against heat-seeking missiles, and chaff to create false radar reflections against radar-guided missiles. Additionally, jets use internal electronic jamming systems to scramble missile electronics and towed decoys.
The exact mechanism depends on the missile type:
• Heat-Seeking (Infrared) Missiles: The jet releases flares, which are pyrotechnic pellets made of magnesium or Teflon. They burn at extreme temperatures (often hotter than the jet's own exhaust), tricking the missile's seeker head into chasing the flare instead of the engine.
• Radar-Guided Missiles: The jet releases chaff, which consists of millions of tiny, aluminum-coated glass fibers cut to disrupt the threat radar. This forms a large, reflective cloud that creates a false echo larger than the actual aircraft.
• Electronic Warfare: Jets use built-in electronic countermeasures (ECM) to emit signals that disable, jam, or deceive the missile's guidance computer.
