To find fake leather that doesn't wear out fast, look for materials made with polycarbonate resins (rather than standard polyurethane) or premium plant-based composites like MIRUM. Standard faux leathers flake and crack because their polyester bases break down in heat and humidity.
1. Advanced Synthetic Leather (Polycarbonate)
What to look for: Brands like Ultraleather® (by Ultrafabrics) and Naugahyde.
Why it lasts: Traditional PU fake leathers use polyester or polyether. Premium synthetic leathers use a 100% polycarbonate resin system. This stops the chemical breakdown (hydrolysis) that causes peeling. It is common in high-end RVs, yacht seating, and medical furniture.
2. High-Wear Vegan Leathers
What to look for: Brands like von Holzhausen and Matt & Nat.
Why it lasts: These brands primarily utilize ultra-microfiber bases. This creates a dense, scratch-resistant, and water-resistant material that mimics the structure of real leather without using crude-oil plastic coatings.
3. Plant-Based, Plastic-Free Leather
What to look for: Materials engineered with MIRUM®.
Why it lasts: Most so-called "plant leathers" (cactus, apple) still rely heavily on polyurethane coatings. MIRUM is entirely plastic-free, made of natural rubber, plant curatives, and natural fibers..
How to Shop and Care for Faux Leather
Check specifications: If buying upholstery, check the "double rubs" or Wyzenbeek rating. Commercial-grade fabrics (the most durable) usually pass 50,000 to 100,000 double rubs.
Keep it out of the sun: UV rays degrade polyurethane over time, accelerating cracking.
Avoid conditioners: Animal leather conditioners cannot penetrate plastic surfaces; they only leave a gassy buildup. Use a gentle, damp microfiber cloth and water, and buff completely dry.
